NEWS FROM THE BORDER

March 17, 2011:  Qatari troops that are deployed on the border between Djibouti and Eritrea in Ras Doumeira (disputed area that had led to a military confrontation between the two countries, killing a hundred people in April 2008 ) came under gunfire from the side of Djiboutian territory by an unidentified group, wounding one Quatari officer.  Qatari troops are deployed in limited numbers following the agreement of June 2010 between Eritrea and Djibouti through the mediation of Qatar. Djibouti had earlier accused the FRUD rebel group (Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy) that are present in the area and the entire region of northern Djibouti  of bringing in weapons into the contested areas.  The EPRDF has also brought more soldiers to the Djibouti border.
